Egil Boyum has been appointed president of Aker Solutions' subsea business in Brazil. Boyum, a Norwegian citizen, has been employed by Aker Solutions since 1984 and has held a range of management roles during this time.

"We have doubled the business since 2008 and need to strengthen our management capabilities to facilitate the continued growth. Hence we have recently recruited several new managers in Brazil and most recently, Egil Boyum, who is one of our most experienced managers," said Mads Andersen, executive vice president of Aker Solutions' subsea business area.

Boyum is an industry veteran and has held a wide range of roles from technical positions in his early career to being global head of operations, heading up global aftermarket and SVP of subsea systems. Boyum's current role of SVP involves heading up the win and client relationship function of major subsea products in Aker Solutions.

Boyum will replace Marcelo Taulois who has been leading Aker Solutions' Brazilian business since 2001. Taulois has developed new market opportunities through the three Brazilian hubs in Curitiba, Rio das Ostras and Rio de Janeiro and has also been a key player in the successful implementation of Aker Solutions' global policies and strategies within these regions. Aker Solutions will now look for other opportunities for Taulois within the company.

Schilling Robotics and Gregg Marine announced the successful completion of the field testing of their subsea drill in the waters offshore of Vancouver, British Columbia.

The Seafloor Drill was conceived by John Gregg, owner of Gregg Marine, and completed its Factory Acceptance Testing at Schilling Robotics in June 2011. The four week sea trials took place last month in St. Vincent's Bay outside of Vancouver, Canada, in water depths up to 250 meters. The sea trials allowed Gregg to work closely with Schilling technicians to fine tune the control systems and train the drill's operators. The drill testing has exceeded Gregg's expectations, as well as the clients that attended the demonstrations.

When speaking of the sea trials, John Gregg commented, "The seafloor drill system is a complex and expanded technology over the current systems in the market today. By leveraging the proven technologies by Schilling Robotics, the Seafloor Drill offers robust telemetry and controls that will maximize the efficiency and effectiveness of the system. To demonstrate our confidence, we invited our industry colleagues to the sea trials in order to see the demonstrations first hand." The drill was able to successfully retrieve core samples of both unconsolidated soft sediment as well as granitic rock. Many in attendance were impressed with the flexibility of the drill compared to other equipment on the market. One of the clients for a major US energy company remarked that "Not many companies are willing to open themselves to outsiders during such an important phase of their development program. It appears to me that the team has put a lot of thought into the design of these tools and I am certain it will pay off with many successful projects."

The system is currently being mobilized to drill near Australia where it will begin work in the coming months. "I am very thankful to Apache Oil for the Seafloor Drill's first job. Their commitment to innovation is shown in their excitement about the system," said Gregg. "We are pleased that the sea trials for the Seafloor Drill were successful," said Tyler Schilling, CEO of Schilling Robotics. "With this technology, and the Cone Penetration Testing unit, Gregg Marine is uniquely equipped for seabed sampling worldwide."

First Subsea has been awarded a contract by Chevron U.S.A. Inc. to supply the mooring connectors for the Jack/St. Malo semisubmersible hub production facility in the Jack/St. Malo fields located approximately 280 miles south of New Orleans, Louisiana, in water depths of 2,133 m (7,042 feet) in the Gulf of Mexico.

The semisubmersible, floating production unit (FPU) will be moored by 16 Ballgrab, ball and taper, mooring connectors attached to polyester mooring lines in a 4x4 arrangement. The Ballgrab Series III male connectors will be the largest produced so far with an un-corroded 2,599mT (25,491kN) MBL, and the first to comply with the new ABS Mooring Guide 2009.

The Ballgrab connector comprises a male connector and female receptacle. The female receptacle will be installed subsea with the mooring system's suction piles, mounted on docking porches. When the FPU is in position, the male connector, attached to the mooring line, is lowered from the surface into the female receptacle to complete the mooring installation. The process is then repeated until all 16 mooring lines are connected.

Aker Solutions has secured a contract with Murphy Sabah Oil Co., Ltd. to deliver a subsea production system for the Kikeh subsea expansion project off the coast of Sabah in East Malaysia. Contract value is undisclosed.

The scope of work includes the delivery of deepwater oil production equipment such as subsea trees, control modules distribution system and manifolds that will be installed at a water depth of 1350 meters.

The project will be delivered out of Aker Solutions high-tech subsea manufacturing center in Port Klang, Malaysia. This is the only facility in the world where a complete subsea production system can be manufactured in one location.

The subsea hardware is expected to be on production in 2013. Aker Solutions was responsible for the delivery of the original Kikeh scope back in 2005. It was the first deepwater development in Malaysia and the Asia Pacific region.

Dave Hutchinson, president, subsea Asia Pacific at Aker Solutions said, "We are extremely pleased to have Murphy as our returning customer. We will deliver a quality project fully utilizing our experience in the region."

The contract party is Aker Process Systems Asia Pacific Sdn. Bhd. The contract has been signed and booked as order intake in 2Q 2011.

First Subsea has appointed John Shaw as global sales and business development manager. Formerly head of Engineered Products Group at Trelleborg Offshore, he will be responsible for developing First Subsea's innovative ball and taper connector business worldwide.

In addition to the Ballgrab range of subsea mooring connectors, ball and taper has been successfully used for pipeline recovery and decommissioning tools, ROV and diverless bend stiffener connectors for risers and umbilicals, pipeline repair, hose connectors, heavy lift and buoy mooring and retrieval applications.

A Fellow of the Institute of Mechanical Engineers, Mr. Shaw is no stranger to the connector technology. At Trelleborg Offshore, he worked with First Subsea on the development of the diverless bend stiffener connector. "The simplicity of the ball and taper connection, and its powerful multi-point grip, makes it a very flexible solution to offshore connections in many demanding applications. My role will be to work with clients to develop existing and new applications for the ball and taper connector," he said.

First Subsea has successfully developed the ball and taper connector technology for drilling applications both onshore and offshore. One of this year's OTC Spotlight on Technology Awards included Canrig Drilling Technology's SureGrip Automated Casing Running Tool featuring the ball and taper gripping mechanism for handling drill piping.

"The ease of ball and taper connection makes it suitable for any application involving gripping, pulling and holding connections under load. John Shaw's experience will allow us to consolidate and improve our current product range, as well as developing opportunities for the connector in new markets," commented Brian Green, general manager, First Subsea Ltd.

Subsea 7 S.A. announced today the award of a contract valued at approximately $80 million from Chevron Australia Pty Ltd for the Chevron operated Gorgon Project, offshore Western Australia.

The work involves the transportation and installation of subsea umbilicals and structures from Barrow Island – 56km off the north-west coast of Western Australia, to the Gorgon and Jansz Fields. The Gorgon and Jansz umbilicals are 59km and 135km in length respectively. These will be transported from Europe to Australia onboard the Seven Seas, and then installed from the vessel in water depths of up to 1,350m using the onboard advanced deepwater flex-lay system. A major trenching scope of work, of up to 70km, will also be undertaken from the Rockwater 2, to stabilise and protect the main umbilicals.

Project management and engineering will commence immediately from Subsea 7’s office in Perth, Australia, with offshore operations scheduled to commence in early 2013.

The Gorgon Project represents an important development for the Subsea Umbilicals market in Australia. The Gorgon Project is one of the world's largest natural gas projects and the largest single-resource project in Australia's history. It is operated by Chevron and is a joint venture of the Australian subsidiaries of Chevron (approximately 47%), ExxonMobil (25%) and Shell (25%), Osaka Gas(1.25%), Tokyo Gas (1%) and Chubu Electric Power (0.417%).

Aker Solutions has been selected for the design, procurement, and fabrication of the subsea containment and diverter assembly for the expanded containment system being developed by Marine Well Containment Company (MWCC). Contract value is undisclosed.

Marine Well Containment Company (MWCC) is a not-for-profit, stand-alone organisation committed to improving capabilities for containing a deepwater well control incident in the U.S. Gulf of Mexico. Members include ExxonMobil, Chevron, ConocoPhillips, Shell, BP, Apache, Anadarko, BHP Billiton, Statoil and Hess.

MWCC's expanded containment system is being engineered for use in the U.S. Gulf of Mexico in water depths up to 10 000 feet (3 000 meters) and will have the capacity to contain 100 000 barrels of liquid and 200 million cubic feet of gas per day and is designed for a 15 000 psi maximum working pressure.

"We are pleased to assist MWCC in the development of its expanded containment system," said Erik Wiik, President, Subsea North America, Aker Solutions. "This is also a testament to the experience and performance of Aker Solutions' employees in Houston, Texas."

Aker Solutions will provide the subsea containment assembly equipped with a suite of adapters and connectors to interact with various interface points consistent with the well designs and equipment typically used by oil and gas operators in the U.S. Gulf of Mexico.

Engineering and project management for the containment and diverter assembly will be provided from Aker Solutions' Houston office. Aker Solutions' contract party is Aker Subsea Inc.

The contract has been signed and booked as order intake in 2Q 2011.

McDermott announced the award of a significant subsea contract to its Australian subsidiary for a deepwater offshore engineering and construction project, including structural transportation and installation of subsea infrastructure. The new contract for work offshore Western Australia is included in the company's second quarter 2011 backlog.

Johnson, McDermott's Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer. The award is for the Macedon Gas Project, situated in the Pilbara region of Western Australia, which will be McDermott's first SURF (Subsea, Umbilicals, Risers and Flowlines) project in Australia. McDermott will carry out detailed engineering, procurement, fabrication, transportation and installation of a 77 kilometer, 20-inch diameter pipeline and will install subsea umbilicals and flexible flowlines using vessels from the company's globally diverse fleet in water depths up to 180 meters.

Aker Solutions has acquired 70 percent of the Norwegian companies Ing. Harald Benestad AS (Benestad) and Phaze Technologies AS.

Benestad and Phaze Technologies, founded and owned by Harald, Pål and Randi Benestad, are well established globally in the subsea industry and have been among the key suppliers to Aker Solutions as well as other major subsea companies for a number of years. Both companies are located in close proximity to Aker Solutions' subsea technology and manufacturing centre in Lier, Norway, and employ 33 people and with a 2010 operating revenue of NOK 49 million (USD 9 million).

Benestad, a highly specialized materials science company, delivers high technology products for hostile, extreme pressure and high temperature subsea environments. All subsea instruments and power consumers require leak free connections through pressure housings and Benestad's power and signal penetrators are viewed by Aker Solutions as the best quality with the highest functionality in the industry.

Phaze Technologies provides advanced and reliable instruments for hydrocarbon leak detection, water leak detection, pressure and temperature measurements and water cut metering. The market for such products is growing as a consequence of more stringent environmental regulations and optimization of production from subsea fields.

"Benestad and Phaze Technologies have unique competence and experience within their fields and a strong commitment to developing leading edge and extremely reliable products. They have very strong technological expertise which will significantly broaden and deepen Aker Solutions' competence base," said Mads Andersen, executive vice president of Aker Solutions' subsea business area.

AGR Field Operations has been awarded a major contract to perform a subsea inspection of offshore facilities in the Bass Strait of Australia. This significant scope of work involves an ROV based general visual inspection and a cathodic protection survey as well as installation work.

The facilities to be inspected include two offshore platforms and their associated pipelines.

AGR Field Operations will be providing Project Management, HSEQ interfaces, Inspection engineers and coordination of the sub-contractors including vessels, ROV and positioning services.

The final report will become part of an inspection database being commissioned by AGR Field Operations which will integrate legacy inspection data, reports and drawings for the assets.

EnerMech, has been awarded a number of contracts "worth a substantial sum" to provide pipeline pre-commissioning services by Subsea 7.

Two awards are for Dutch sector projects where the workscope includes pre-trench flooding, cleaning and gauge pigging, high speed flushing, hydrostatic strength testing and post tie-in final gauging and hydrostatic leak testing in pipeline systems.

In another Dutch sector award, Subsea 7 has contracted EnerMech to perform pre-commissioning operations comprising pig loading, pig trials, pipeline flooding, cleaning and gauging, pipeline strength testing, Xmas tree isolation barrier testing, flexible riser annulus vacuum testing, pipeline system leak 'tightness' testing and pipeline bulk dewatering.

EnerMech recently invested £20 million in establishing a new Process, Pipeline and Umbilical Services division (PPU) which is targeting the global pre-commissioning market.

EnerMech PPU director, Les Graves, said, "These awards mark EnerMech's first major European pipeline project success and our pro-active approach and strategy of providing excellent personnel and equipment is already paying off.

"Securing these awards demonstrates that the market is receptive to a service provider which is committed to safe, cost effective and innovative solutions. I am confident this will be the first of many awards."

Statoil and its partners want to compress gas on the seabed to boost recovery. Subsea compression was recently selected as the preferred concept for Gullfaks.

"Gas compression on the seabed represents an important advance in technology, and once again, Statoil is leading the way for development of new technology. This is one of our most important measures for improving recovery from existing fields," said Siri Espedal Kindem, Statoil's vice president of technology.

Since 2008, Statoil and its partners have worked with Framo Engineering to develop technology for compressing wet gas on the seabed. Statoil has now decided to take the concept a step further on the Gullfaks South subsea field.

"This could increase production from the field by three billion cubic metres of gas, which means a six percent increase in recovery," said Ivar Aasheim, head of Field Development on the Norwegian shelf.

The current field recovery rate is already 62 percent. The combination of subsea compression and conventional low pressure production in the later phases could lift the recovery rate to 74 percent, thus also increasing the Gullfaks C lifetime.

Why compression?

Natural pressure declines as a field ages. This means that compression is necessary in order to extract more gas, and to get the gas to the platform.

The standard solution is compression on a platform or from land; however, the closer the compression is placed in relation to the well, the more gas can be extracted. That is why Statoil wants to place the compressor near the wells, on the seabed.

Not just Gullfaks

Statoil is currently working on three subsea compression projects in early stages. On the Åsgard field, the selected concept involves a subsea solution that will help increase pressure from the Mikkel and Midgard reservoirs. This could enhance recovery by 28 billion cubic metres of gas and 14 million barrels of condensate.

Together with operating company Shell, we are also working on a similar seabed solution on Ormen Lange.

"And this is just the beginning. Subsea compression can increase recovery on several small and medium-sized fields in the time ahead. Statoil has already identified more candidates," said Siri Espedal Kindem.

Seabed factories

Today, almost 50 percent of Statoil's production comes from a total of 488 subsea wells.

Statoil's expertise in subsea operations is the key to more efficient production and improved recovery.

"In many cases, subsea facilities make it possible to produce oil and gas that would not otherwise have been profitable to recover. This is how we take responsibility for increasing production from the Norwegian shelf," said Aasheim.

Subsea gas compression is another step in the direction of seabed factories, where operations that currently take place on platforms are moved down to the seabed.

"Processing on the seabed, particularly gas compression, is also very important in developing fields in deep water and vulnerable areas. This is an important technological breakthrough," Kindem concludes.

Parker Energy Products Division (EPD), a division of Parker Hannifin Corporation, is introducing their subsea metrology and dimensional control services to the Gulf of Mexico oil and gas market.

EPD has demonstrated their success with photogrammetry, surveying and position monitoring services in Northern Europe and Asia Pacific. Recently the division has added technical staff in Houston, Texas to support the metrology service expansion to the Gulf of Mexico.

The first subsea metrology system Parker will utilize in this market is SICAMS®; a single camera metrology system used to obtain accurate subsea measurements (centerline distances, diameters, pitch and roll) of existing structures. With SICAMS®, data can be gathered simply, efficiently, and precisely. Unlike other metrology systems, SICAMS® is revolutionary because it does not require acoustics or a full survey crew. Achieving an accuracy of 1 part in 5,000 is routine with Parker's system, though higher accuracies have been measured. Its state-of-the-art processing capability promises quick calculation and deliverables on-site.

The metrology system operates by using multiple photos from many angles to produce an accurate 3D model of the object being measured. Petrobras has awarded GE Oil & Gas a four-year service agreement to deliver repairs, maintenance and retrofits on Petrobras' fleet of subsea equipment installed in the Campos Basin offshore Brazil. The scope of the agreement, valued at approximately $120M, includes service and repairs on over 300 exploration and 250 production tools, as well as retrofitting six subsea production trees each year with GE advanced technology.

GE will conduct the service program from its Macaé Service Center, located in Rio de Janeiro state, which is currently undergoing a $30M investment refurbishment and expansion. The 91,000 sq. meter facility, which employs over 200 highly skilled employees, will be capable of state-of-the-art inspection, maintenance, repair, spares parts, rental tools and field services for capital drilling, subsea wellhead systems, and subsea production and controls equipment.

Fernando Martins, vice president—Latin America, GE Oil & Gas said, "GE will apply its latest high-tech subsea equipment service and repair technologies across much of Petrobras' Campos Basin installed fleet to help minimize downtime and optimize production output. We will deliver this important assignment from our Macaé Service Center which is currently under expansion and delivers critical offshore production servicing projects for customers including Petrobras, Transocean, OGX and Brasdrill and all the IOC's currently operating in Brazil."

The frame service agreement builds on the announcement this week that Petrobras has awarded GE's Wellstream business a long-term, $200M-plus flexible pipe and subsea equipment logistics services contract to be supported from a dedicated new 55,000 sq. meter, $90M investment Logistics Base that GE will build adjacent to Wellstream's existing manufacturing site in Niterói, 14 kms outside Rio de Janeiro.

In February GE Oil & Gas received $50M in contracts to supply subsea wellhead and installation tooling systems to Petrobras for deployment in Campos and Santos basin projects, bringing to over 1,400 GE's tally of mission-critical subsea wellhead systems installed in Brazilian waters.

GE Oil & Gas has an established presence in Brazil and serves its deepwater segment with integrated drilling & production subsea equipment and services, as well as high-tech unit and modular gas turbines and compressors solutions for fixed & FPSO applications.

GE will open a new $100M investment Global Research Center in Rio de Janeiro in 2012.

Far more oil and gas is now being produced from subsea wells on the Norwegian continental shelf than from platform wells.

The Norwegian Petroleum Directorate has collated production from the fields in 2010 and found that subsea wells dominate the picture.

Last year, almost 131.3 million standard cubic meters (Sm3 o.e.) oil equivalents were produced from subsea wells and about 125.4 million Sm3 o.e. from platform wells.

Increased production of gas has caused the production from subsea wells to exceed production from the fixed platforms. Large gas producers, such as the Troll field in the North Sea and Ormen Lange and Åsgard in the Norwegian Sea, contribute extensively with their many subsea facilities.

In the past ten years, the trend of more subsea wells has been rising. Increasingly improved technological solutions have made it possible to develop many small reservoirs using subsea facilities in instances where a solution with a fixed platform has not been commercially viable.

FMC Technologies has signed an agreement with Statoil for the manufacture and supply of subsea production equipment to support the Visund Nord offshore development. The contract has a value of approximately $50 million in revenue to FMC Technologies.

Visund Nord is a fast-track oil and gas field located in water depths of approximately 1,150 feet (380 meters) in the Norwegian sector of the North Sea. FMC's scope of supply includes the manufacture of two subsea production trees, one manifold and associated subsea and topside control systems. The equipment will be based on a standard subsea solution designed by FMC for Statoil. The integrated structure and wellhead systems will be delivered in the spring of 2012 and final deliveries will occur in the first quarter of 2013.

"Visund Nord is the fifth fast-track project we have been awarded from Statoil in the last two years," said Tore Halvorsen, FMC's Senior Vice President of Global Subsea Production Systems. "We are pleased that Statoil continues to recognize our strengths and capabilities in supporting their tie-back and fast-track developments."

Aker Solutions has been selected to supply three subsea production control umbilicals for the Chevron operated Jack & St. Malo field developments in the Gulf of Mexico. Contract value is undisclosed.

The production control umbilicals will provide hydraulic, electrical and fiber optic service to the Jack and St. Malo subsea fields. Scope of work includes three electro-hydraulic steel tube production umbilicals totaling 40 miles (65 kilometers). Engineering, project management, and manufacturing will take place at Aker Solutions' state-of-the-art umbilical facility in Mobile, Alabama. The three umbilicals will be used at Chevron's Jack & St. Malo field, located in the Walker Ridge Area of the Gulf of Mexico in water depths of approximately 7,000 feet (2,100 meters).

Technip has been awarded by Statoil a contract, worth approximately EUR55 million, for the Vigdis NE field development located in the Norwegian Sea at a water depth of 220 - 310 meters.

This contract covers:
  • welding and installation of flowlines, including a 1.5 kilometer pipe-in-pipe production flowline and a 9 kilometer plastic-lined water injection flowline,
  • supply of flexible tails for the flowlines,
  • subsea equipment installation,
  • installation and tie-ins of flowlines flexible tails, jumpers and umbilicals.

Technip's operating center in Oslo, Norway will execute the contract. Flowline welding will take place in the Group's spoolbase in Orkanger, Norway, while flowline installation will be performed with the Apache II, a pipelay vessel from Technip fleet, in mid-2012.

FMC Technologies, Inc. announced Tuesday that it has been awarded a contract by Petrobras to supply two subsea separation and boosting systems for the Congro and Corvina fields, located offshore Brazil in the Campos Basin. The contract has a value of approximately $130 million in revenue to FMC Technologies.

In addition to a subsea gas/liquid separation and boosting system for each field, FMC's scope of supply includes two subsea manifolds that will each perform production and gas lift injection for 10 wells. Other equipment includes two subsea boosting module stations, pipeline tie-in equipment and subsea control systems. The control system incorporates an innovative subsea robotics technology, designed by Schilling Robotics, to operate the manifold and separation station valves. The equipment will be engineered and manufactured at FMC's facilities in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

The Congro and Corvina project is FMC's fourth implementation of subsea processing technologies in Brazil, following phases I and II of Shell's Parque das Conchas (BC-10) field, and the state-of-the-art heavy oil separation and water re-injection system for Petrobras' Marlim field.

"The significance of this project is it will allow demobilization of one existing production platform and replace it with two subsea separation systems," said Tore Halvorsen, FMC's Senior Vice President of Global Subsea Production Systems. "This is a major milestone for subsea processing technologies and opens a new and attractive alternative solution to extend the life of mature fields and increase oil recovery."

Subsea 7, a global leader in seabed-to-surface engineering, construction and services, on Tuesday announced that it has completed the design and build of the first commercial AIV, a technology which has the potential to revolutionize Life-of-Field projects.

Subsea 7 has an ambitious plan to develop a series of Autonomous Inspection Vehicles (AIV), initially capable of general visual inspection, through to fully capable work-class sized intervention vehicles. A combined project team comprising hardware developers and operational personnel from Subsea 7 and Seebyte, a Scottish based software developer for the autonomous robotics market, has been working together to deliver the first vehicle.

The design and build of the vehicle is complete and successful progress through in-water trialling and commissioning phase is underway. Following completion of extensive in-water testing and capability development, the first commercial AIV is expected to be available in late 2011.

Through the development process, many technical challenges have been overcome, the shape of the vehicle has changed from the original design concept due to the significant work done using the latest Computational Fluid Dynamics Modelling to optimize the vehicle's shape with regard to stability and maneuverability, while conserving the onboard power resources.

The vehicle is fully autonomous and can operate for a 24-hour period on a single charge of its lithium-ion batteries, which are housed in pressure vessels within the hull. These batteries have been specifically designed for the vehicle and provide a more cost-effective solution to pressure tolerant batteries, with a lower capital cost and much improved cycle lives. /p>

The sensor package has been developed to cover the requirements of general visual inspection; it comprises the latest sonar technology coupled with high quality video cameras and low power LED lighting.

A significant software integration and development project has been running in parallel with the hardware development and this too has used the most advanced techniques to manage, debug and control the development.
