Aker Solutions has received a Letter of Award from Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (DSME), to supply two drilling equipment packages to the new 'Cat D' drilling rigs the yard is building for the rig operator Songa Offshore. Options (if exercised) for two additional units are included. Contract value is undisclosed.

The development of the two Cat D semi-submersible drilling rigs has been initiated by Statoil, the international energy company, which awarded two long-term contracts for the units to Songa in July 2011.

The first two units will be delivered in 2014, and the main deliveries from Aker Solutions will take place in 2012 and 2013. The contract includes topside drilling equipment, procurement and commissioning of the rigs at the DSME yard. The two optional units (if exercised) are scheduled for completion in 2015.

"We are very pleased to win these contracts, which demonstrate the good cooperation between Statoil and the drilling operators and drilling system providers. Together, we have developed a new generation drilling and well intervention design, purpose made for the needs for North Sea operations, through a joint FEED (front end engineering and design) phase. We are also looking forward to continuing the good, long-term collaboration with DSME on this project, the latest addition to a long string of successful joint projects," said Thor Arne Håverstad, head of Aker Solutions' drilling technologies business.

Work on the project will start immediately in Kristiansand, Norway, and in other Aker Solutions drilling technologies units in Asker, Norway, Erkelenz, Germany and Houston in the US.

National Oilwell Varco has signed contracts to supply drilling equipment packages for seven drillships to Estaleiro Atlantico Sul ("EAS"), including drilling riser and pressure control equipment. The value, over the term of the deliveries, is approximately $1.5 billion.

The UK oil and gas industry has successfully tested its ability to deploy a well capping device in the waters west of Shetland. As part of the industry's commitment to further strengthen the UK's emergency response capabilities, the Oil Spill Prevention and Response Advisory Group (OSPRAG) has undertaken a number of initiatives to improve well engineering and oil spill response capability, including the development of a well capping device for use in UK waters to seal-off an uncontrolled subsea oil well in the unlikely event of a major well control incident.

The purpose of the recent Emergency Equipment Response Deployment (EERD) exercise was to simulate the logistical process of transporting a well capping device, loading it on to a vessel and lowering it over the side before fixing it to a specially-built simulated well on the sea floor.

The exercise was project-managed and executed by Total E&P UK on behalf of Oil & Gas UK and ran from July 16-26, 2011 at a site in block 206/4, around 75km north west of Shetland.

The various stages of the exercise included:
  • Exercise site prepared by deploying a specially-built landing base to the seafloor at a depth of 300 meters to accurately simulate a subsea well.
  • Remotely operated vehicles (ROVs) used to deploy subsea oil dispersant (in this instance, a non-toxic fluorescent dye).
  • Heavy-duty cutting shears deployed to sever a subsea marine riser pipe. This would be done in a real-life scenario in order to clear the riser out of the way to make room for the cap to be landed.
  • Capping device deployed over the side of a multi-service vessel using a crane.
  • Device landed on to the well, locked on to the base and activated using ROVs.
  • All equipment, including the landing base, recovered.

Oil & Gas UK's chief executive, Malcolm Webb, said, "The UK oil and gas industry has a very high level of confidence in its ability to prevent blowouts. We haven't experienced one here in over 20 years – in which time over 7,000 wells have been drilled.

"No matter how unlikely a blowout is, we recognize the importance of being prepared for low-probability, worst-case scenarios. This is why we regularly test our emergency response capabilities and why we wanted this particular exercise to be as realistic as possible.

"Its success proves we can not only quickly mobilize and deploy the capping device, but also incorporate the use of a wide variety of other related equipment, such as subsea dispersant and cutting shears, which in a real-life situation would be used as part of the same operation.

"The next stage will involve a full debrief involving all participants to identify any learning opportunities and Oil & Gas UK will share these findings throughout the industry."

Aker Solutions has been selected for the design, procurement, and fabrication of the subsea containment and diverter assembly for the expanded containment system being developed by Marine Well Containment Company (MWCC). Contract value is undisclosed.

Marine Well Containment Company (MWCC) is a not-for-profit, stand-alone organisation committed to improving capabilities for containing a deepwater well control incident in the U.S. Gulf of Mexico. Members include ExxonMobil, Chevron, ConocoPhillips, Shell, BP, Apache, Anadarko, BHP Billiton, Statoil and Hess.

MWCC's expanded containment system is being engineered for use in the U.S. Gulf of Mexico in water depths up to 10 000 feet (3 000 meters) and will have the capacity to contain 100 000 barrels of liquid and 200 million cubic feet of gas per day and is designed for a 15 000 psi maximum working pressure.

"We are pleased to assist MWCC in the development of its expanded containment system," said Erik Wiik, President, Subsea North America, Aker Solutions. "This is also a testament to the experience and performance of Aker Solutions' employees in Houston, Texas."

Aker Solutions will provide the subsea containment assembly equipped with a suite of adapters and connectors to interact with various interface points consistent with the well designs and equipment typically used by oil and gas operators in the U.S. Gulf of Mexico.

Engineering and project management for the containment and diverter assembly will be provided from Aker Solutions' Houston office. Aker Solutions' contract party is Aker Subsea Inc.

The contract has been signed and booked as order intake in 2Q 2011.

Treaty announced the purchase of several pieces of machinery that will be sent to Belize in early July.

Andrew V. Reid, Chairman and CEO of Treaty Energy Corporation, stated, "The major piece of equipment that we have purchased is a much larger drilling rig that is capable of drilling to depths of 6500 feet. We will post pictures of this new rig along with its specifications to the Treaty Energy website in a few days."

Mr. Reid stated, "The reason for this purchase was two fold: first, the Schramm 450 Drilling Rig originally purchased to go to Belize will need more work than our time line permits. That rig will be used in Texas when refurbishment is completed; and second, current studies by Treaty's group of geologists, well locators, and satellite surveyors suggest the possibility that deeper pay zones could exist and this rig will be capable of exploring those deeper pay zones at a later time, after the more shallow wells are drilled and producing."

Mr. Reid went on to say, "We have acquired equipment for well pad construction and road construction to the well sites. This equipment consists of: a New Holland B95 Backhoe; and a 2006 D4G Caterpillar Bulldozer. The final purchase is a crew truck to replace the rental vehicle that has been used over the past months. This vehicle is a Chevrolet Duramax Diesel Crew Cab 4WD Pick Up."

Treaty indicated that all of the above equipment will be shipped by sea to Belize out of Mobile Alabama with a planned departure date of July 10, 2011. The shipment will go directly to Belize with a scheduled travel time of five days.

In conclusion Mr. Reid stated, "Because of the rapid pace of events in Belize, our stakeholders can expect frequent updates on this project as all such updates are now becoming extremely important."

Wärtsilä has been awarded the contract to supply the design and equipment for a new Platform Supply Vessel (PSV) for offshore operations. The order has been placed by Hellesøy Verft AS, the Norwegian shipyard that will build the vessel, which is to be owned and operated by Norwegian ship owner, Vestland Offshore. The vessel is scheduled to be delivered towards the end of 2012.

In response to the customer's demand for a modern, high quality, and fuel efficient PSV, Wärtsilä Ship Design has developed a highly energy and environmentally efficient vessel solution. Based on the well-proven VS 485 design, the new vessel has an optimized hull design for greater efficiency, with corresponding reduced emission to air. The Vessel will be fitted with Wärtsilä medium speed engines and Wärtsilä NOx Reducer.

In addition to the design package, Wärtsilä's scope of supply includes four Wärtsilä 9L20 diesel generator sets, the electric propulsion system, the power management system, and an integrated automation system.

"Vestland Offshore is building a fleet of vessels that emphasize energy efficiency, safety, reliability, and environmental sustainability. These are all major focus areas for today's oil industry, and Wärtsilä's designs are at the forefront of achieving these aims," said Tor Østervold, Chairman of the Board of Vestland Offshore.

The VS 485 Mk III fulfils the highest possible Environmental Rating Number (ERN) 99.99.99.99, which represents the vessel's capability for maintaining its position and normal operations under certain weather conditions. The new Wärtsilä PSV design includes a unique power and propulsion system based on the company's patented Low Loss Concept. This provides both additional safety and extra reliability for continuous operation, in various failure modes.

"Over the years, Wärtsilä has gained considerable experience in the development of energy efficient vessels. In particular, the optimization of hull lines has been a major focus area of this development work. By combining this know-how with our overall expertise and experience, new design optimization tools, and state-of-the-art power and propulsion solutions, we have been able to produce a highly efficient portfolio of Offshore Service Vessel designs," said Johannes Eldøy, Director, Project Development for Wärtsilä Ship Design.

Wärtsilä has had a long and successful relationship with the Hellesøy Verft yard, and this will be the seventh VS 485 vessel that they have built. However, this is the first ship of the new Mk III design that they have ordered. The new ship will be one of the most cost and fuel-efficient supply vessels ever to be launched. It is designed to be suitable for world-wide operations.

The vessel is 85.6 meters long, has a breadth of 20 meters, a cargo deck area of approximately 1000 square meters, and has a dead weight at 7 m of 5,000 tonnes.

GE O&G's drilling & production business has been selected to supply high-pressure, high-temperature (HPHT) equipment to Bien Dong Petroleum Operating Company, a subsidiary of the state-run Vietnam Oil and Gas Group (PetroVietnam), for the development of gas fields, offshore Vietnam.

Under a contract of approximately $30 million, GE will provide 16 sets of HPHT surface wellheads and subsea production trees, along with associated equipment and services, for deployment in phase one of the development campaign for blocks 05.2 and 05.3 of the Hai Thach and Moc Tinh gas fields. This marks the largest single contract for surface wellheads and subsea trees in Vietnam by any equipment manufacturer.

Sam Aquillano, vice president—drilling & production, GE Oil & Gas said, "We are honored to supply high-tech equipment to Bien Dong Petroleum Operating Company to support Vietnam's offshore drilling and production operations. This is the largest single contract for surface wellhead and subsea trees in Vietnam, and GE hopes to build on this contract award by continuing to support Vietnam's burgeoning oil and gas industry with high-tech, high-performance equipment and services from across our integrated oil and gas portfolio."

The high-tech equipment, with the capability to operate at 350°F and 15,000 psi, is a first for Vietnam and reinforces GE's position as a leading supplier of surface HPHT and ultra HPHT wellheads and subsea trees in Asia. The contract follows GE's recent agreement with Total Malaysia to supply ultra HPHT equipment (450° F and 15,000 psi).

GE Oil & Gas has a strong local presence in Vietnam for turbomachinery and drilling and production equipment and services support. Last year, GE signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with PetroVietnam, paving the way for the future supply of advanced oil and gas equipment, services and spare parts to optimize the total life-cycle value of key oil and gas projects in Vietnam.

This contract further affirms GE's position as a significant wellhead and subsea production tree supplier for surface HPHT and ultra HPHT equipment in Asia and follows a recent award with Total Malaysia for ultra HPHT equipment (450°F and 15,000 psi). GE Oil & Gas has a local presence in Hanoi for turbomachinery equipment and services and in Ho Chi Minh City for VetcoGray subsea equipment and services. GE Oil & Gas also provides advanced technology equipment and services to other high-profile projects in Vietnam, such as the BP Pipeline, Dung Quat Refinery, Phu My Refinery, Camau Fertilizer and Vietsovpetro. Last year, GE Oil & Gas successfully signed an MOU with PetroVietnam outlining the principles and basis of long-term collaboration regarding the supply of advanced oil and gas equipment, services and spare parts to optimize the total life-cycle value of key oil and gas projects.

North Dakota's first oil and saltwater spill into Lake Sakakawea caught the industry unprepared for a lake cleanup, but that could soon change.

A group of oil well and pipeline owners was already making plans to spend $1 million on boats, booms, skimmers and ice-borne pumps for fast response to a lake accident when the first spill into the lake was reported April 2.

Petro-Hunt LLC says five barrels of oil and 100 barrels of saltwater escaped a pipeline rupture at well north of Keene, near the lake on the south side.

A committee of 12 well owners and three pipeline companies with wells and pipelines near the lake started talking after last summer's BP Deepwater well blowout in the Gulf.

Committee chairman Jack Braun, of Whiting Petroleum, one of the largest oil producers in the oil patch, said the recent spill into Lake Sakakawea could put plans on the fast track.

"My reaction (to the lake spill) was, 'Oh, no.' I was really disappointed. This is a black eye for the entire industry. It might encourage the committee to work faster," Braun said.

Most of the oil was recovered, but all the saltwater reached the lake, though diluted by running snow-melt.

Rep. Kenton Onstad, D-Parshall, said he's asked state oil regulators about the lack of a statewide plan in the event of a lake spill.

"What's the plan when a tanker driver from Texas slides around the curve (at New Town) and goes off the bridge? What's the plan for that?" he said.

He said oil wells could be sited a safe distance from the water and reach oil with long horizontal legs.

"Why play with disaster?" Onstad said. "So many wells are near water. There should be better precautions so that any major spill doesn't hit the lake."

The Dakota Resource Council, an environmental group, said the first lake spill is among eight reported spills in a year, and troubling because lake water is used for community drinking water and agriculture.

Braun said the companies recognize the weakness in the overall spill response plan and are voluntarily moving to make it stronger.

"Our goal is create a cooperative to maintain spill response equipment that's big enough to operate on the lake, or get oil under the ice," he said. "We recognize the potential danger and we want to voluntarily do what's right," Braun said.

Braun said the committee members identified more than 100 of their own wells and a "handful" of pipelines close to the lake, or on tributaries. "These have the potential to either spill directly into the lake, or into drainage to the lake," he said.

One oil pipeline is attached to the underside of the 4 Bears bridge at New Town, which spans the lake.

He said a lake accident is more likely to involve hundreds, not thousands of barrels. A possible scenario is loss of well control causing oil or mist to shoot out from the well, or a pipeline break, which could potentially be worse, he said.

Braun said the committee is looking into how to jointly own the equipment, where to store it and training. The committee will meet Thursday to review draft agreements, he said. Part of the discussion will be about sharing equipment with companies that aren't in on the purchase.

If it goes well, Braun said it's possible the equipment could be purchased within months.

He said spill prevention is engineered into well equipment, into the strength of pipes and valves, and maintained through inspections for corrosion and other problems.

By law, oil companies are required to have spill response plans. There are about 20 response trailers in the oil patch with personal protection, booms, absorbent pads, fencing, and the like for a land spill. None of that gets to oil out on the lake, and that presented a troublesome gap in the overall response plan, Braun said.

When an SM Energy oil well near Arnegard caught fire last month, specialized well control equipment was trucked from Texas and arrived four days later.

Braun said having lake response equipment in the oil patch means it could be on the water within hours. He said committee plans to purchase a couple of larger boats, capable of pulling up to 5,000 feet of oil-trapping boom, a couple of smaller work boats, two oil skimmers and possibly an air boat for working close to shore. An ice response would involve equipment to drill holes or trenches on the ice to accommodate pumps.

Onstad said he thinks state regulators need to give more thought to wells sited near the lake before there is a major spill.

"A double dike (around wells) is not good enough," he said.

Plexus has signed an agreement to supply as the end user Gazflot, a subsidiary of leading Russian oil and gas company Gazprom, with its proprietary TRT-S™ mudline suspension ('MLS') equipment for oil and gas exploration drilling activities for one well offshore West Kamchatka in the Magadan Basin in the Okhotsk Sea, Russia. The contract for the supply of both MLS and service is worth approximately $500,000 USD, and is expected to be completed by November 2011.

Plexus' patented TRT-S MLS equipment enables jack-up drilling rigs to transfer casing loads from a rig to the sea bed whilst allowing for a subsequent planned disengagement and possible suspension platform tieback options for a wellhead system. Due to climate conditions in the West Kamchatka region drilling activities for the well can only be conducted from May to September. However it is anticipated that additional wells will be drilled in 2012, of which Plexus is hopeful to tender both MLS services and potentially for the supply of its POS-GRIP surface wellhead equipment technology.

Plexus CEO Ben van Bilderbeek said, "This contract marks yet another geographic milestone in Plexus' growth strategy as it continues to develop into an internationally recognised force in the supply of specialised and technically superior oil and gas wellhead and equipment services. Not only is Gazflot a new customer for the Company, Russia is also a new region for us and one in which Plexus is focussed on gaining a foothold in given the ever increasing number of opportunities with large operators active in the Russian Artic Shelf such as Rosneft and Lukoil.

"I would also like to highlight that our equipment allows the removal of temporary abandonment caps through the blow out preventer ('BOP'), and for tie back to occur before the abandonment caps are removed. The importance of such an essential safety feature was formally recognised by the Montara Commission of Inquiry Report in June 2010 in relation to the oil spill incident offshore Australia in late 2009."

Halliburton has been awarded several contracts for the provision of equipment and services on two offshore blocks in the South China Sea. This is the first ultra-high-pressure/high-temperature (HP/HT) oil and gas drilling project in Asia.

The exploration campaign calls for two firm wells and one potential well. Halliburton will provide directional drilling, measurement-while-drilling and logging-while-drilling (M/LWD) services; well completion equipment and services; surface well testing and downhole drillstem testing (DST) equipment and services; and cementing equipment, fluids and pumping services. Drilling is scheduled to start in the third quarter of 2011.

This project will push existing technology limits, with required equipment specifications at 250°C and 15,000 psi. Under these contracts, Halliburton will provide several ultra-HP/HT technologies for drilling,

completions, cementing and testing, including the industry's first M/LWD sensors rated to 230°C (446°F) and 25,000 psi (172.37 Mpa), as well as the industry's first multi-cycle DST tools rated to 260°C (500° F).

"We believe Halliburton's leading position in developing solutions for extreme environments, and our HP/HT experience track record, were factors in securing these contracts," said Mark Richard, Halliburton's senior vice president for the Asia Pacific Region. "We're pleased to be recognized for the innovations Halliburton provides to its customers in addressing their most complex wells in extremely challenging environments."
