PG&E Welcomes New CEO

- PG&E Welcomes New CEO

Tuesday, August 09, 2011
PG&E Corp.

PG&E announced that Anthony F. Earley, Jr., 62, will become the company's new Chairman of the Board, Chief Executive Officer, and President. Earley's appointment – the first in PG&E's history to come from outside the organization – puts the company under the leadership of one of the nation's most experienced energy executives.

As head of Michigan-based DTE Energy for more than a decade, Earley built the company's core businesses – Detroit Edison and Michigan Consolidated Gas Company – into two of the most highly respected electric and natural gas operating companies, with strong performance on many of the industry's key safety and reliability measures.

"Tony is a highly respected and proven CEO who will provide fresh eyes and strong leadership as we focus on public safety and operations excellence," said Lee Cox, interim Chairman, Chief Executive Officer, and President. "We looked across the industry and found the person best qualified to help us win back public confidence."

Earley joined Detroit Edison in 1994 as President and Chief Operating Officer. He became CEO of DTE Energy in 1998 and served in that role through 2010. Most recently, he has been DTE's Executive Chairman. DTE Energy is one of the nation's largest diversified energy companies.

"PG&E has a proud legacy," said Earley. "It's a great privilege to help an iconic company recover from its recent challenges and reclaim its standing as the utility others admire and aspire to follow."

Earley has received accolades for his crisis leadership. In 2003, the largest blackout in U.S. history began at a utility in Ohio and triggered outages in Michigan and six other states. Public officials and customers praised Earley's response to the emergency. Michigan Governor Jennifer Granholm called him a "calming influence" and exactly the person she would want to lead during a crisis.

"Tony Earley proved that he was a leader we could rely on to be open, honest and accountable at a very difficult time," said Granholm. "He stepped up publicly. He made sure we knew what was happening, what we could expect and when we could expect it. And he made sure DTE came through and delivered on what it promised."

In addition to his success establishing DTE as an operational leader, Earley has also been instrumental in forging industry consensus on national energy policy challenges. During his recent tenure as Chairman of the Edison Electric Institute (EEI), the association of investor-owned utilities, he helped the group work constructively in Washington on issues ranging from climate change to energy efficiency and support for electric vehicles.

"Tony pulled the industry together to develop a common proactive position supporting a reasonable and affordable approach to climate change enabling us to be a constructive force in the discussions. He is highly respected across our industry," said Tom Kuhn, President and CEO of EEI. Earley also has served as Chair of the Nuclear Energy Institute.

"The PG&E Board has asked Tony to continue the significant leadership role PG&E has played on climate change issues," said Cox. "Tony understands and admires California's unique role in leading the country on environmental issues, and he is eager to become involved here."

Locally, Earley has dedicated significant time and energy to supporting civic and community initiatives, with a particular focus on driving economic revitalization in Detroit and the surrounding region. He is currently a board member of Business Leaders for Michigan, United Way for Southeastern Michigan and Cornerstone Schools.

"Tony Earley is passionate about investing in the community," said Detroit Mayor David Bing. "He knows that for business to thrive, the community has to thrive – and he leads by example to make that happen."

Philippines Welcomes US Help to Contain China

- Philippines Welcomes US Help to Contain China

Tuesday, June 14, 2011
Dow Jones Newswires
MANILA

Philippine President Benigno Aquino said Tuesday his country needed help from longtime ally the United States in its increasingly tense dispute with China over rival claims in the South China Sea.

Aquino accused China of breaking international law by sending vessels into waters claimed by the Philippines and close to its landmass, while portraying his country as weak compared with its militarily superior Asian neighbor.

"Of course they (China) are a superpower, they have more than 10 times our population. We do not want any hostilities to break out," Aquino told reporters when asked about recent Chinese actions in the disputed area.

"Perhaps the presence of our treaty partners, the United States of America, ensures that all of us will have freedom of navigation (and) will conform to international law."

The U.S. and the Philippines are bound by a 1951 Mutual Defense Treaty that calls on both parties to come to one another's aid if either were to be attacked by an external party.

Aquino's comments came after the U.S. ambassador to the Philippines, Harry Thomas, Tuesday said the U.S. remained committed to helping its former colony in any dispute over the South China Sea.

Thomas emphasized at a public forum in Manila that the Philippines and the U.S. were "longstanding treaty allies" and "strategic partners".

"We will continue to consult each other closely on all issues, including the South China Sea and Spratly Islands," Thomas said.

Aquino welcomed Thomas's comments, which are likely to irk China as it has long insisted that the U.S. has no role to play in resolving its territorial disputes with Asian countries.

"We are pleased by that, especially the reiteration that we are a strategic partner," Aquino said when asked to respond to Thomas's comments.

Aquino's remarks continued an escalation in tensions between China, the Philippines and other rival claimants to the strategically vital and resource-rich South China Sea over recent months.

The Philippines and Vietnam, in particular, have expressed alarm at what they say are increasingly aggressive actions by China in the disputed waters.

The Philippines has accused China of putting up posts and a buoy in Philippines-claimed areas of the Spratlys, an archipelago of more than 100 islands and reefs in the South China Sea.

It also accused China of sending naval vessels to intimidate Filipino fishermen and the crew of an oil exploration ship near an atoll called Reed Bank.

Aquino on Tuesday specifically highlighted recent "incidents" at Reed Bank, pointing out it was well within the Philippines' exclusive economic zone of 200 nautical miles.

He said the Reed Bank was just 80 miles from the nearest major Philippine landmass, but 576 miles from Chinese territory.

"Five-hundred-and-seventy-six miles is obviously greater than 200 miles, so why is there suddenly a dispute if we are all conforming to international law," he said.

Under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, a country's exclusive economic zone extends to 200 miles from its continental shelf.

In response to earlier complaints from the Philippines, China has denied taking any aggressive actions and insisted it remained committed to resolving territorial disputes with its neighbors peacefully.

Aside from China, the Philippines and Vietnam, Taiwan, Brunei and Malaysia have overlapping claims to sections of the South China Sea.

The area is believed to hold major oil and gas deposits, and has commercial shipping lanes that are vital for global trade.

AED Welcomes New CEO

AED Welcomes New CEO

Thursday, April 28, 2011
AED Oil Ltd.

AED announced the appointment of Mr. John F. Imle, Jr. to the role of Chief Executive Officer, effective May 1, 2011. John was invited by the AED Board to take the CEO position in order to strengthen the operational and technical focus of the Executive team and manage the critical next stages of AED's significant exploration, appraisal and development programs. His immediate priorities are to augment the existing management team, direct value adding programs and attract the additional capital required for enhancing the value of the Company's assets. John will also continue in his role as a Director of the Company.

John originally joined the Board as Nations Petroleum's representative in early 2010, following AED's acquisition of Nations' assets in Indonesia (Rombebai and South Madura PSCs) and Brunei (Block L). John's appointment as CEO is concurrent with John stepping down from his role at Nations Petroleum. He has operational knowledge of AED's assets in Brunei and Indonesia and, as a petroleum engineer, brings over 40 years' experience in the oil and gas industry to the post. His career highlights include operations management and Executive-level positions at the U.S. energy company Unocal Corporation. He became Unocal's Head of Global Oil, Gas and Geothermal and then rose to the ranks of President and Vice Chairman. He served on Unocal's Board of Directors for over 10 years.

"I'm excited about the potential of AED's portfolio," John said. "The recent confirmation of the positive results from our exploration wells in Block L, Brunei should, once appraised and developed, provide substantial cash flow in the medium term. Modern 3D seismic surveys over the Jerudong Oil Field, also in Block L, should lead to early gas and oil production, which supports AED's confidence in the block. In Indonesia, we have recently announced a two-year extension of the exploration contract at Rombebai. We believe there is an opportunity for a gas discovery of LNG scale and that the potential to acquire new 3D seismic in the South Madura PSC, will help identify further potential prospects."

"These opportunities combine to make AED an attractive opportunity for investors and strategic partners alike. I have confidence that with appropriate funding, AED's current Asian portfolio will develop into a significant group of producing assets. This is in addition to AED's Puffin and Talbot Fields in the Timor Sea which, given higher oil prices and advancing technology, should prove commercially attractive. The operator, Sinopec, is reviewing new seismic data and will issue reports and recommendations in the near future."

AED Chairman, Mr. David Dix, welcomed John's appointment, "AED will benefit from John's extensive experience. I am excited about his appointment as he already knows the AED team and Board well and I'm confident he will work successfully with them as the Company continues to enhance its high-impact portfolio. I will assist John during a handover period (approximately three months), after which I plan to continue serving AED in the role of Non-Executive Chairman."
