Forum Energy Technologies (FET) announced the acquisition of SVP Products. The company sells Forum's Wood Flowline and Phoinix product lines, including swivels, plug valves, relief valves, chokes, pup joints and manifold trailers from three facilities in North, East and West Texas. SVP also performs critical repair and recertification services of these products from its locations as well as from its fleet of mobile units. SVP's customer relationships and service capabilities strengthen Forum's Production and Infrastructure division, which provides completion products, engineered process and production systems, measurement and monitoring systems, construction and field services, and a full range of valve and other flow control products. Terms of the transaction were not disclosed.

Cris Gaut, FET's chairman and chief executive officer, explained the importance of the acquisition. "SVP significantly expands the sales channel and service capabilities for our completion products offering and complements our Wood Flowline and Phoinix completion product offerings. SVP has an excellent reputation in the marketplace for customer service, knowledge and dependability. We are very pleased to partner with Jay Nabors, SVP's founder, and the team at SVP. Our goal is to help expand SVP's business to serve clients across the North American shale plays."

The Helix Well Containment Group (HWCG) announced that it is now capable to respond to a subsea well containment incident in water depths of up to 10,000 feet.

The consortium previously announced its intention to achieve this milestone by mid-summer, and has achieved this ahead of schedule. Previously, it had capabilities to operate in water depths of up to 8,000 feet.

HWCG is a consortium of 24 deepwater operators in the Gulf of Mexico that have come together with the common goal of expanding capabilities to quickly and comprehensively respond to subsea well incidents to protect employees, communities and the environment.

"Combining ultra-deep water depth capability with a 15,000 pounds per square inch-gauge (psig) intervention capping stack, the HWCG consortium has the technology, expertise and resources of a diverse group of companies to respond immediately in the unlikely event that a deepwater well's blowout preventer fails to operate as designed," said David Coatney, HWCG's Managing Director.

Coatney was recently named HWCG Managing Director in May. He has more than 35 years of experience in the oil and gas industry, both in the United States and overseas. In previous roles, Coatney has served as an international upstream oil and gas asset consultant, Vice President of Production for Swift Energy and in various management and engineering capacities for Marathon Oil Company, where he worked for 29 years.

Coatney has been integrally involved in emergency preparedness and response for more than 20 years. He has acted as an Incident Commander—both domestically and abroad—and has led many successful responses in operational, natural disaster, well control and civil unrest incidents.

"Dave's combined expertise in drilling, production, offshore operations and incident response will be a strong asset to HWCG," said John Weust, HWCG's Steering Committee Chair. "I am confident he will play a significant and positive role in the ongoing operations of HWCG, in addition to enhancing the group's position in responding to the future needs of the industry."

Coatney holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Petroleum Engineering from Louisiana State University. He is a member of the Society of Petroleum Engineers, the American Petroleum Institute and the Association of International Petroleum Negotiators.

The Helix Well Containment Group (HWCG) announced it will substantially increase its subsea well containment capabilities this year by expanding its ability to control and contain a release in water depths up to 10,000 feet.

HWCG is a consortium of 22 deepwater operators in the Gulf of Mexico that has come together with the common goal of expanding capabilities to quickly and comprehensively respond to such an incident to protect employees, communities and the environment. HWCG's current system is capable of facilitating control and containment of spills in water depths up to 5,600 feet and will utilize Helix Energy Solutions Group's Q4000, the intervention vessel effectively used during the Deepwater Horizon response.

The system features a 10,000 psig capping stack.

By April 8, 2011, the system is expected to have increased containment capacity and capabilities for water depths up to 8,000 feet, as well as capture and processing capabilities of 55,000 barrels of oil per day and 95 million cubic feet of natural gas per day. In the coming weeks, HWCG will also add a 15,000 psig capping stack.

Full operational capability for water depths of up to 10,000 feet is anticipated mid-summer 2011.

"Our enhanced response and containment capabilities would exceed the depth of any well currently drilled or planned by the consortium's 22 members and would allow operators to control capping and containment stacks at the greater depths," said Roger Scheuermann, commercial director for HWCG.

Building upon equipment effectively used in the Deepwater Horizon response, HWCG has signed an agreement with Helix Energy Solutions Group to provide the primary components of the response. Additionally, HWCG has agreements in place with more than 30 service providers who will provide additional services, products and personnel, if needed.

Shell and HP have announced a breakthrough in the capability of their jointly developed inertial sensing technology to shoot and record seismic data at much higher sensitivity and at ultra-low frequencies.
The new onshore wireless seismic acquisition system is designed to provide a clearer understanding of the earth's subsurface, thus increasing prospects for discovering greater quantities of oil and gas to meet the world's increasing energy needs.

The sensing technology has now been demonstrated to have a noise floor - a measure of the smallest detectable acceleration over a range of frequencies - of 10 nano-g per square root Hertz (ng/rtHz), which is equal to the noise created by the earth's ocean waves at the quietest locations on earth as defined by the Peterson Low Noise Model. The tests were conducted in the seismic testing vault at the U.S. Geological Survey's (USGS) Albuquerque Seismological Laboratory facility in New Mexico.

"Responding to the energy challenge, the oil and gas industry is tackling ever deeper and more complex reservoirs, as well as reservoirs in very tight rock systems," said Dirk Smit, chief scientist for Geophysics and vice president of Exploration Technology, Shell.

"In particular, for onshore settings, this requires enhanced quality seismic data as well as the cost-efficient, flexible deployment of seismic sensor networks. The collaboration with HP demonstrates Shell's strategic approach to driving innovative technology solutions through active partnering."

"This new sensing milestone is the latest step in the collaboration between HP and Shell, which is on track to produce a leap forward in onshore seismic data quality to improve the exploration risk evaluation and decisions, illustrating the industry-wide benefits that can be achieved through cross-company innovation," said Rich Duncombe, senior strategist, Technology Development Organization, Imaging and Printing Group, HP.

At the test facility, HP was able to compare the seismic response of the new sensor side by side with a USGS reference sensor when an earthquake occurred in the Gulf of California during the testing period. The signal from the reference sensor was matched by the new sensor down to 25 mHz, verifying the sensor's response at low frequencies.

The seismic system uses the breadth of HP's technology development capabilities as well as Shell's advanced geophysical expertise in seismic data acquisition systems and operations. As such, this collaboration builds on the core strengths of each company to advance technology in this field.

The system will be delivered by HP Enterprise Services and the company's Imaging and Printing Group (IPG). It is based in part on the high-performance sensing technology originally co-developed by HP Labs - the company's central research arm - along with IPG and Shell research in seismic network design.

HP and Shell's collaboration is a cornerstone for an information ecosystem that empowers people to make better, faster decisions to improve safety, security and environmental sustainability while transforming business economics. Sensing solutions are positioned to provide a new level of awareness through a network of sensors, data storage and analysis tools that monitor the environment, assets, and health and safety.
