Woodside Petroleum Ltd. (WPL.AU) said Thursday that it has signed an agreement with landowners allowing it to develop the massive Browse gas export project in Western Australia state.

Woodside said the agreement with the Goolarabooloo Jabirr Jabirr native title claim group includes initiatives worth over A$1 billion, such as education, training and employment programs, support for indigenous businesses and payments when project milestones are met.

The Browse joint venture also includes Royal Dutch Shell PLC (RDSB.LN), Chevron Corp. (CVX), BHP Billiton Ltd. (BHP.AU) and BP PLC. (BP.LN).

It's planning to give final approval to the development, estimated by analysts to cost more than $30 billion, by mid-2012.

KCA Deutag has been selected by Woodside Energy as one of two drilling contractors to carry out a major Front End Engineering Design (FEED) contract relating to a 3,000HP Modular Platform Drilling Rig (MPDR) for the Browse Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) Development, offshore North West Australia.

The MPDR will be capable of drilling large bore gas wells up to 9,000m measured depth and of being transferred between Dry Tree Units (DTUs) based on a tension leg platform design. The DTUs will be positioned over the Calliance and Brecknock Fields, located approximately 270km from the Kimberley Coast, Western Australia.

Woodside is Australia's largest independent publicly traded hydrocarbon exploration and production company and one of the world's leading producers of LNG. The Browse LNG Development is a joint venture between Woodside, BHP Billiton, BP, Chevron and Shell.

FEED work has commenced and is being carried out by KCA Deutag's engineering division RDS in its London offices. It will take approximately six months to complete, include more than 30 persons, and involve interfacing with Woodside's two selected DTU contractors, Aker Solutions in Oslo and MODEC in Houston.

Shares of ConocoPhillips (COP) are down on a Bloomberg report that the oil giant plans to begin drilling in the Browse Basin off Australia's northwest coast.

The move will come in the second or third quarter in an effort to judge the potential of discovering natural gas in the area.

ConocoPhillips shares are down 0.76%, or $0.54, to $70.89.

Wood Group Kenny has been awarded a contract to support the Browse liquefied natural gas (LNG) development located offshore in Western Australia's Kimberley region, approximately 425km northwest of Broome.

Leading international subsea engineering company, J P Kenny Pty, together with its related Wood Group Kenny sister companies, will perform subsea and pipelines front end engineering design (FEED) for Browse. The FEED project commenced in February 2011 and will take place over the next 12-15 months based at the new Browse Project office in Perth. The first gas from Browse is expected in 2017.

Wood Group Kenny is also participating in the riser FEED work for Browse, through MCS Kenny, and will support Aker Solutions in delivering design and engineering solutions for the steel catenary risers (SCRs) on Browse.
