BP, Coast Guard Find No Sheen near Macondo

- BP, Coast Guard Find No Sheen near Macondo

BP plc

On Aug. 25, 2011, BP confirmed through a standard visual wellhead inspection that there is no release of oil from the Macondo well (MC252).

In addition, BP also conducted a visual inspection of the Macondo relief well confirming the same result.

Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) video inspection was conducted in the presence of representatives from the Gulf Coast Incident Management Team (GCIMT) (MC252 Unified Command) located in New Orleans. GCIMT members watching the live video feed included representatives of the US Coast Guard, the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management, Regulation and Enforcement, and representatives from the states of Louisiana, Mississippi and Florida.

The inspection was prompted by press reports that sheens of oil observed in the vicinity were from the Macondo well. The Macondo well was capped on July 15, 2010 and permanently killed by sealing the well and annulus with cement on Sept. 19, 2010. The well was later plugged and abandoned with the approval and oversight of the US government.

During the course of inspecting both wellheads, small, intermittent bubbles were observed emanating from cement ports at the base of the wellheads. These observations are consistent with testing and sampling performed last year that detected nitrogen bubbles, a residual byproduct of the nitrified foam used in setting the wells’ surface casing cement.

BP and the US Coast Guard have conducted multiple surveys of the area in recent days and found no evidence of oil sheens in the Macondo vicinity.

Oil Drops Near $96 After Weak US GDP Report

- Oil Drops Near $96 After Weak US GDP Report

Jul 29, 2011

The price of oil dropped $96 a barrel on Friday after the U.S. government said the economy is at an insufficient 1.3% annual rate in the Q2.

The data raised questions about demand for oil over the months. The Commerce Department also revised the January to March figures to display growth in the first six months was the weakest since the recession ended two years ago.

Oil prices have varied over the month, from $94.90 a barrel on July 1 to 98.87 on July 22 before making another fall.

NPD to Carry Out Seismic Acquisition near Jan Mayen in Summer

NPD to Carry Out Seismic Acquisition near Jan Mayen in Summer

Wednesday, April 27, 2011
Norwegian Petroleum Directorate

The Norwegian Petroleum Directorate (NPD) will carry out acquisition of 2D seismic data in the waters around Jan Mayen this summer. The acquisition activity will start around June 10 and will last up to three months.

Last fall, the Norwegian government resolved that an impact assessment would be made of the maritime zones off Jan Mayen, with a view to future petroleum activity. The NPD's acquisition of seismic data is part of this impact assessment. Seismic data acquisition around Jan Mayen is also planned for next summer.

The data acquisition will take place using the vessel R.V. Harrier Explorer operated by PGS, and with the aid of PGS' Geostreamer technology. This is a new technology for seismic acquisition, characterized in part by the fact that the streamer, which in this case is eight kilometres long, is towed somewhat deeper in the water than is the case in conventional seismic acquisition. This means that the streamer can withstand higher waves, thus making the acquisition activity less dependent on weather and consequently more efficient.
