Halliburton CEO: Demand for Services Outpacing Capacity Growth

- Halliburton CEO: Demand for Services Outpacing Capacity Growth

Halliburton Co. (HAL) Chief Executive Dave Lesar said Monday that demand for oil field services in North America, such as hydraulic fracturing, continues to grow faster than companies like his can add equipment as producers rush to drill unconventional oil basins.

"Overall, growth in the demand for our service has outpaced capacity additions and we expect this imbalance to continue going forward," Lesar said on a conference call to discuss second-quarter results.

Halliburton reported a profit of $739 million, or 80 cents a share, up from $480 million, or 53 cents a share, a year earlier. The latest period included a penny in restructuring-related costs. Revenue climbed 35% to $5.94 billion, which set a new company record.

Analysts polled by Thomson Reuters most recently forecast earnings of 74 cents a share on revenue of $5.71 billion.

Much of the quarter's success is attributed to activity in North America, where high crude prices, producers' healthy balance sheets and easy capital have fueled a rush to unlock unconventional onshore oil reserves, including shale formations.

Natural gas drilling in North America, though down 2% in the quarter, remained "relatively resilient, spurred by the increase demand for power generation due to the substitution of natural gas for coal and harsh summer temperatures in various regions," Lesar said. Though Halliburton remains "a bit cautious" on natural gas drilling, the company's move to reduce prices in order to keep customers drilling has been fruitful, he said.

Halliburton also cited an uptick in work in the U.S. Gulf, winning service contracts for eight of the 18 deepwater wells that have been permitted since U.S. regulators lifted a ban on such drilling in February. The ban was enacted in response to last year's Deepwater Horizon explosion, which killed 11 workers and touched off the worst offshore oil spill in U.S. history. Halliburton provided cementing services for the well the Deepwater Horizon was drilling for BP PLC (BP, BP.LN).

Lesar cautioned, however, that the pace of new drilling permits has slowed and once the current backlog of work is complete, the Gulf of Mexico recovery could stall in the second half of the year.

Internationally, where recovery from recession has come more slowly for service companies than in North America, margins improved slightly.

"We are now seeing evidence that the international pricing is stabilizing," Lesar said. "We believe that steady volume increases should be a precursor for overall international pricing to improve toward the end of the year."

Delays in Iraq weighed on results, though Lesar said he expects profitability in the Middle Eastern country by the fourth quarter.

"We believe that Iraq will be one of the fastest-growing countries internationally in the coming years and that we will benefit significantly as a result of a first-mover strategy," he said.

Lesar also said that while Halliburton is spending heavily in sub-Saharan Africa to establish operations in countries including Mozambique, Tanzania and Uganda, the efforts should "position us for many years of profitable operations going forward," Lesar said.

MOSCOW
by Jacob Gronholt-Pedersen

The Chevron-led Caspian Pipeline Consortium Friday said it has started a $5.4 billion expansion to double capacity to 1.4 million barrels a day by 2015.

"The capacity of the 900-mile [1500 kilometer] pipeline, which carries crude oil from Western Kazakhstan to a dedicated terminal in the Black Sea, will increase to 1.4 million barrels a day from its current capacity of 730,000 barrels a day," Chevron said in a statement.

The project will be implemented in three phases with capacity increasing progressively from 2012 to 2015, Chevron said.

The pipeline, which has been operating for ten years, ships crude from the Tengiz and Karachaganak fields in Kazakhstan to Russia's Black Sea port of Novorossiysk.

CPC shareholders include Lukoil Holdings, Transneft, Shell, ExxonMobil), Kazakhstan's KazMunaiGas and Italy's Eni.

Enterprise to Boost MAPL Capacity

Enterprise to Boost MAPL Capacity

Friday, May 06, 2011
Enterprise Products Partners L.P.

Enterprise Products Partners L.P. (EPD) on Thursday announced a planned expansion of the Rocky Mountain segment of the partnerships Mid-America Pipeline (MAPL) system, which is expected to add up to 85,000 barrels per day (BPD) of incremental transportation capacity for natural gas liquids (NGL).

Supported by shipper commitments obtained during a fourweek open season that ended April 29, 2011, the project will include looping the existing pipeline system with up to 290 miles of 16-inch diameter pipeline, as well as pump station modifications. The additional capacity is designed to accommodate growing natural gas and NGL production from major basins in Utah, Colorado, Wyoming and New Mexico. Several new natural gas processing plants are being constructed in the Uinta, Piceance, and Greater Green River basins that should fill the expansion by 2014.

We have received strong demand for this expansion of the Mid-America system, said A.J. Jim Teague, executive vice president and chief operating officer of Enterprises general partner. Shippers executed 10-year, firm, ship-or-pay transportation agreements representing a total initial commitment of 38,500 BPD with options which could ultimately increase the total expansion to 85,000 BPD. We believe this expansion will enable producers to maximize the value of their Rocky Mountain NGL production by providing them access through our integrated system to the largest domestic NGL market, located on the Texas Gulf Coast. The transportation agreements and our construction plans provide us the flexibility to increase capacity efficiently and cost-effectively while giving producers additional time to finalize their drilling and natural gas processing programs.

Subject to the approval of certain regulatory agencies, the project is expected to begin service in the third quarter of 2014.

The Rocky Mountain portion of the MAPL system extends more than 3,000 miles and transports NGLs from the Overthrust and San Juan basin areas to Enterprises Hobbs fractionator in Gaines County, Texas. An interconnect to the partnerships approximately 1,300-mile Seminole Pipeline at Hobbs, allows shippers to reach the partnerships NGL fractionation facility in Mont Belvieu, Texas, one of the largest of its kind in the world. Enterprise is in the process of increasing its fractionation capabilities by 75,000 BPD, bringing total capacity at the complex to 375,000 BPD following its expected completion in the fourth quarter of 2011.

Enterprise Products Partners L.P. is the largest publicly traded partnership and a leading North American provider of midstream energy services to producers and consumers of natural gas, NGLs, crude oil, refined products and petrochemicals. EPDs assets include approximately: 50,200 miles of onshore and offshore pipelines; 192 million barrels of storage capacity for NGLs, refined products and crude oil; and 27 billion cubic feet of natural gas storage capacity. Services include: natural gas transportation, gathering, processing and storage; NGL fractionation, transportation, storage, and import and export terminaling; crude oil and refined products storage, transportation and terminaling; offshore production platform; petrochemical transportation and storage; and a marine transportation business that operates primarily on the United States inland and Intracoastal Waterway systems and in the Gulf of Mexico.
